Olympic Air takes off on October 1st 2009

For us in Greece Olympic Airways, Olympic Airline or Olympic Air is Olympic. Typically speaking, because that’s what really counts, on October 1st 2009, our Olympic, will be Olympic Air.

For the history, on April 30 of this year, Marfin Investment Group (MIG) signed definitive agreements for the acquisition of certain assets of Olympic Airlines and Olympic Aviation Services, and today, five month later, Olympic Air is ready to commence its aviation activities.

Within this short time-frame, a new airline was created. Anyone can understand that this could be done only by dedicated, committed and hard working people, to be exact 5,000 people. These people work for Olympic Air, the aviation company, Olympic Handling, the ground handling and cargo services company and Olympic Engineering, the maintenance, repair and overhaul company.

Ο ΕΟΤ, ο Ελληνικός Οργανισμός Τουρισμού από την γέννησή του σκοπό είχε να προβάλλει τον Ελληνικό Τουρισμό και να διασφαλίζει την ποιότητα των παρεχομένων υπηρεσιών.

Από σήμερα προσέθεσε τον ρόλο του διαμεσολαβητή κρατήσεων και του διακομιστή χρηστών Internet σε δικτυακούς τόπους, του εξωτερικό, οι οποίοι “προβάλλουν” την Ελλάδα. Θα αναλύσω και τα δύο παραπάνω.

We from the travel and tourism industry have several tools we use to network and promote our services and products. Among the most important tools is our participation in exhibitions, either as exhibitors or as visitors. Exhibitions or trade fairs or trade shows or what ever they are called, they are B2B, B2C, local, international, niche…you name it. Few are worth the time and money – but when we talk about ITB Berlin then its a whole different ball game. ITB Berlin has written the book called exhibitions, conferences, shows, fairs, etc. Although other exhibitions are at best stagnant, if not at a downward trent – ITB Berlin manages to expand and innovate.

The numbers prove it: more than 180,000 visitors, among these 108,000 trade visitors, and over 10,000 exhibitors from 180 countries and with exhibitor sales of about 5 billion Euro. These are the numbers of ITB Berlin 2008. Trade visitors as well as public visitors have the opportunity to explore the international travel industry’s entire product spectrum in an exhibition area of 160.000 sq. meters!!! Now that is unbeatable.

World Travel Market (WTM) 2008 – ExCeL London – UK

This up coming Monday November 10 till 13, the entire worldwide travel and tourism industry will be participating in the World Travel Market at the ExCel in London as it has become an industry standard.

Its funny when you think of it – every year just before this major event, World Travel Market, a war breaks, we have a devaluation of currency, we have 9/11, we have to deal with an epidemic, or the entire banking system is at the verge of total collapse.

We spend mega tons of brain power, investigating, analyzing, strategizing and all these bold and powerful words that end in -izing, on how and what will happen and what do we do.

Unless the world stops turning, a meteor hits earth or we are invaded by little green Martians from outer space – we have to understand that this is the international business environment we have to work in and that people will travel, go on vacations and need all the services the travel and tourism industry has to offer.

If we want the business, we have to show it – now!!!

Every so often something happens and we say “the world will not be the same anymore”.

The great crash of 1929, WWI & II, Attack on Pearl Harbor, Nagasaki – Hiroshima, 9/11 and all of this is just in the past 90 years.

Well my friends, the world is the same, we simply forget. “History repeats itself” with a different twist every time. The key thing is to be prepared.

The day after Philoxenia 2008 – Thessaloniki

As always, Thessaloniki was wonderful. Its food, entertainment, people, etc. The only thing that was a set back were the works being undertaken for the construction of the metro, but that is progress.

But one minute – lets focus here. The purpose of the trip to Thessaloniki was to participate in the exhibition Philoxenia 2008: 24th International Tourism Exhibition and secondarily to have a good time.

Well – we only had a good time.
Its like setting up tables for a gala diner  – and nobody comes – as if everyone was in some sort of conspiracy. The only event that people participated was the opening ceremony by the Minister of Tourism, Aris Spylotopoulos and the HATTA prize giving activity. That was IT.
