- PELLA CONFERENCE CONCLUSIONS
After the conference that took place in Edessa regarding the development of tourism in both Edessa and Mountainous Pella, a number of conclusions were drawn.
There has been an effort to maintain a certain strategy as to the development of tourism in the above areas. It is also apparent that there are investment opportunities in the municipality of Edessa in the field of tourism. The handling of tourism issues in Pella needs to be more systematic in order to ensure unified co-ordination and planning, and private initiative needs to be encouraged.
The main goal of Edessa is to become a unified network, mainly supported by local businessmen, that will offer high quality tourist services while safeguarding its uniqueness.
The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Mr. George Paschalidis, stressed the fact that development will result from the unified and co-ordinated handling of tourist issues with the help of the State as well as the locals. Emphasis was placed on the potential of Edessa to play a major role in Greek tourism by the main speakers at the conference, Mr. Ioannis Sondras, Mayor of Edessa, Mr. Vassilios Valassopoulos, General Secretary of Central Macedonia, and Mr. Eugene Giannakopoulos, General Secretary of GNTO. Other important Greek and foreign speakers referred to the potential, the demands and the promotion of tourist products in the field of alternative forms of tourism, and offered their help to the region of Mountainous Pella, regarding the promotion of alternative holidays.

- ZEEBRUGGE PORT AS DIRECT LINK BETWEEN SCOTLAND AND CONTINENTAL EUROPE FOR SUPERFAST FERRIES
The board of directors of Attica Enterprises has announced that the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium was selected as the link between Scotland and Continental Europe for the Superfast ferries, starting May 2002.
Zeebrugge port was chose as the most appropriate for the ever-growing needs for tourist transportation and trade between Scotland and the main European markets.
The distance between the port of Rosyth in Edinburgh and Zeebrugge is going to take about 16 hours to cover by the Superfast vessels, i.e. much faster than the journey between Scotland and Continental Europe as things stand today, namely with the combination of road and sea transport.
Last September Superfast Ferries was chosen by the state organisation Scottish Enterprise as the most capable and most specialised company for the Scotland - Continental Europe route, among the 42 companies that had expressed an interest.
1 year from today Superfast ferries will serve seven European countries sailing in three main European seas, continuing the effort that the company has been making since 1995 to become the fastest and most modern fleet of passenger and car ferries in Europe.

- GOLDEN SUN AMONG THE FIRST 100 UK COMPANIES
Golden Sun Leisure has presented an impressive booking increase by 70% since the beginning of this tourist season. Golden Sun Holidays was awarded a prize by Deloitte & Touche Indy 100, taking the 88th place among the most rapidly expanding enterprises in the U.K.
Despite the general U.K. decrease in bookings for holidays in Greece and Cyprus, Golden Sun Leisure has managed to stabilise, even increase, its share in the market, due to the fact that the company made great efforts to develop the necessary delivery channels closing deals with hundreds of travel agencies in the U.K., while offering its customers airport tickets and accommodation at competitive prices.
Based on this increase of 70%, Golden Sun Leisure is certain that it will accomplish its aims for 2001, as was the case in the previous year when the company managed to enjoy larger profits.
The competition that awarded Golden Sun Holidays the prize has taken place eleven times and it was organised by Deloitte & Touche in collaboration with the newspaper "Independent on Sunday". Winners were selected by Deloitte & Touche and professor David Storey of the university of Warwick. The relevant research covered 7.700 companies with sales ranging between 5 and 100 million pounds and classified the companies according to their expansion rate. Golden Sun Holidays came in 88th and was the sole company from the field of tourism to receive such recognition.

- ETHIOPIA - NEW TOURIST DESTINATION
Intro Marketing and Consulting started its campaign to promote Ethiopia as a tourist destination with an event that took place at the Ethiopian restaurant AXUM in Athens on June 18, with the support of the Consulate of Ethiopia in Greece and Ethiopian Airlines. After the crisis with Erythrea Ethiopia is entering a new peaceful phase and claims its share in the worldwide tourist market.
The country is a constant source of new experiences and full of surprises. The tourist can become familiar with ways of life from millions of years ago. Its natural beauty impresses the visitor from the minute he sets foot on the place, with its lakes on volcano craters, its savannahs, wildlife parks exquisite sights and historical sites that show the ancient history of Ethiopia, as it is one of the few African countries that was never a colony.
Consul General of Ethiopia, Mrs. Terina Armenaki-Kalogeropoulou, stressed the fact that Ethiopia is now ready to host more visitors and gave a picture of the tourism mobility for this year. Before the crisis in 1987 the number of tourists visiting Ethiopia amounted to 137.000, while it is expected that by the end of 2001, 120.000 tourists will have chosen Ethiopia as their destination, a record number for the country. She gave assurances that the Consulate will always be close to the people of Tourism and the Press.
Area Manager, Mr. Issayas Woldemariam also spoke on behalf of Ethiopian Airlines, mentioning that that the airline, which is one of the oldest airlines worldwide, can serve the visitors' needs through a highly developed network. The guests had the opportunity to get informed about the beauty of Ethiopia, the services provided and the infra-structures that are being developed.
It was a typical Ethiopian event with traditional music and dancing, where the guests had the chance to taste Ethiopian food and end their meal with the traditional coffee ritual.

- MESSE BERLIN VIRTUAL "LAUNCHED" INTERNET WITH OVER 2.500 EXHIBITORS
The International Tourism Exchange Berlin recently opened its Virtual Market Place portal on the Internet with over 2.500 exhibitors. As a result this market place for the industry, the world's largest trade fair for the service sector, which takes place in a physical sense every year for five days in March, is now accessible world-wide and throughout the year.
The virtual Fair has been set up to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days in the year, ensuring communication and information between visitors and exhibitors, with a concept that has been designed specifically to meet the needs of customers. Exhibitors can set up their virtual stands on the net using simple input masks. In addition to information about the company itself, each virtual stand can also be used to illustrate ten products or product innovations, with pictures and an in-depth description, list of contents or technical details.
There are a number of obvious advantages for anyone visiting the Virtual Fair site: they can establish direct contact with exhibitors by e-mail, the information bag is a function that lists the entire range of products, enabling information to be gathered and printed out, and the search engine can be used to access exhibitors from specific countries, or product information. The heading of "similar products" can be used to find comparable products and services from all of the exhibitors. None of the search engines currently available in the Internet can offer the sort of search functions for specific branches of industry that are available at the Virtual Trade Fair. For smaller companies in particular this is an ideal means of maintaining a constant presence on highly competitive markets.
Under this new Internet strategy Messe Berlin Gmbh intends to also present all its own events in a virtual form throughout the year, an objective that it expects to achieve by 2002.
"The intention is not to render traditional trade fairs superfluous. Instead, taking a real market place as the basis for the virtual equivalent, we intend to acquire new and previously unrepresented exhibitors from around the world for our existing fair trades. Those exhibitors that we have already approached are 100% convinced of the value of a year-round presentation of products, innovations and company information" said Raimund Hosch,
Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin Gmbh. In HoschÕs words: "We are aware that only a few trade fairs will be able to survive in the future. Our advantage is that our leading trade shows already provide the largest, real market places for their respective branches of industry. virtual market place is only of interest to visitors if it can ensure the widest possible coverage of a particular industry.
Although it has a major part to play, the Virtual Trade Fair is only one of the new elements of the integrated, overall presentation by Messe Berlin on the web. The decisive feature of the new Internet strategy is its unique combination of modular components involved in planning the presentation of a trade fair, supplemented by tools for use in everyday business dealings, which will ensure that visitors and exhibitors remain with the portal throughout the year. These tools include the very latest information about the industry, travel services and marketing consultancy functions.
For exhibitors at Berlin's own events a virtual trade fair stand is provided free of charge for the first year. However, non-exhibitors can also obtain stands to present their products, at a cost of around 16 EUROs per day.

- AEGEAN-CRONUS QUALITY FLIGHTS AT LOW PRICES
Aegean and Cronus combined their forces and offered flights to travellers both within the country and abroad, at the following prices:
One way domestic 12.900 drs. Aller retour domestic 25.800 One way international 24.900 Aller retour international 49.800
These prices were valid from June 20 until July 10 for all domestic and international flights of the common network of the two airlines and for a limited number of seats.
The collaboration of the two multi-awarded airlines, which are known for their comfort, punctuality, and high-quality service on their flights, creates new potential for development in the field of air travel. It has thus led to the creation of the largest private airline in Greece, with a fleet of 15 aircraft, 6 of which are private, that take travellers to 11 big Greek cities and 8 European cities with 120 flights daily.
