Because it rarely rains during the summer in Greece, the outdoor cinemas are virtually guaranteed no interruption from the elements.

There are dozens of outdoor cinemas throughout the Athens area and almost every neighborhood of the capital has at least one. A few years back there were hundreds of them, but many have been turned into apartment complexes or supermarkets.

Usually the outdoor cinemas show reruns of first-run films the winter season shown in indoor cinemas, so this is an opportunity for you to see a film you may have missed during the winter.

Films usually change every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and the films start at dusk, around 9 p. m., with a later showing at 11 p.m. Plenty of popcorn, candy and refreshments are available during inter-mission. Films are listed in the daily newspapers.

It is said that summer cinema-going is more of a social occasion with smoking and low conversation allowed.
